Harvest activities such as shrimping, crabbing, clamming, and fishing are central to our culinary ambitions. Other optional activities include wildlife viewing, sea kayaking, wilderness hiking, sight seeing, visits to historical museums and tours of the many Russian and Native sites surrounding Sitka.
Clamming is an easy-going activity for the entire group. Guests usually work in pairs; although, it can hardly be called work as we typically harvest enough clams in an hour to provide table fare for a week. Our staff diligently cares for the catch—keeping the clams in cool, clean saltwater [allowing them to expel sediment] for about 24 hours, thus assuring outstanding quality and flavor.
Crabbing and shrimping are flexible side ventures, often combined with other activities—particularly wildlife viewing, whale watching and beach combing—within that day's itinerary. While boating to a variety of scenic locations, traps are set and retrieved. Mentally prepare yourself for sitting down to more fresh caught prawns and crabs than your party [or for that matter, the front line of the Oakland Raiders] can eat. And rest assured that our staff takes all the necessary steps to bring this bounty to the kitchen and, ultimately, your plate in optimum condition.
Fishing (both fresh and saltwater) will also bring an array of delightful dishes to the table. King and silver salmon, halibut, lingcod, rockfish and "sand dabs", provide seasonally lucrative fisheries. For more detailed information on the seasonal availability of specific species, please contact us personally via phone or email.
